Laurel Park’s Christmastide Day program boasts four $100,000 stakes races on Saturday. Horses from no less than 10 different last-prep locales converge in the Mid-Atlantic for the four clashes.
Here’s how I see the stakes quartet:
Laurel Park // Race 4 // Willa On The Move Stakes
#5 Headland (1-1 ML)
Comments: New York shipper #5 Headland has both a class and pace edge, two factors rarely given back to the competition when in dual possession. Rail-drawn #1 Dream Chaser may be most capable of running with the top pick early, but surrenders a great deal in class. Give sophomore #6 Apple Picker the underneath nod for the exacta.
Laurel Park // Race 6 // Dave’s Friend Stakes
#8 Cowan (4-1 ML)
Comments: Extremely competitive race, I’ll give a slight lean to #8 Cowan, who has had a tendency to outrun his odds since coming to Raymond Ginter Jr.’s barn. Obvious, local win machine Factor It In has the home-court advantage and is the defending champion in this race. Threes Over Deuces won this race two years ago. They are now age 7 and 8, respectively, while 9-year-old Greeley and Men and 7-year-old Manny Wah offer more classy veteran representation. Let’s take one on the upswing with #8 Cowan.
Laurel Park // Race 7 // Carousel Stakes
#5 Peyton Elizabeth (30-1 ML)
Comments: #2 Hybrid Eclipse clearly the horse to beat with 7 wins in 11 local starts, but she didn’t threaten at all in this race last year over 9 furlongs coming off a very similar victory in the Thirty Eight Go Go. There’s very little speed to set up for her close, and perhaps #5 Peyton Elizabeth can steal this race on the class rise from the front (if Hybrid Eclipse barnmate #1 Saddle Up Jessie isn’t sent up into the mix). I love Peyton Elizabeth’s pedigree to stay 1-1/8 miles as a granddaughter of A.P. Indy on one side and Arch on the other. I get it … ice-cold trainer Ferris Allen taking over for high-octane trainer Jamie Ness is not the trainer move you prefer to see … so demand a price.
Laurel Park // Race 8 // Robert T. Manfuso Stakes
#2 Offaly Cool (2-1 ML)
Comments: Inside speed can be very effective at Laurel at 1-1/16 miles with a very short run to the clubhouse turn. #2 Offaly Cool brings top NYRA speed jockey Kendrick Carmouche and you have to think the plan will be to send and take the race to the competition. I’ll key this one in exactas over #6 Kinetic Way, #7 Be Better and #8 Magic Michael – all for powerhouse barns (Rick Dutrow, Brittany Russell, Jamie Ness).
