Hawthorne Racecourse has a 9-race card with the 0.50 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 6. The sequence has a $7,500 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 6 (8:50 PM PST)
3-High Ho Hez Silver (5-1)-Three-year-old makes his debut for the Jim Eaton barn and comes off a sharp qualifier. Went the back half in 57.2 and could reward the connections at first asking if mind its manners.
4-Little Fighter (5/2)-Comes off a good effort from the 8-hole after being off almost a month. Todd Warren gets the call and that could help chances in the 2nd start in Stickney.
7-Rayjen (4-1)-This is another who had a good try after some time off. The 7-hole shouldn't hurt this 3-year-old. The Nick Prather pupil could follow cover and look to be the best down the lane.
Race 7 (9:10 PM PST)
2-Brooklets Banner (5/2)-Could dispose of this crew if dialed on high. This is a game competitor who has made only 10-starts since the beginning of 2023. Casey Leonard will keep in play and if close to 100% will be difficult to down.
5-Rosa's Rebel (5-1)-Has had excuses and may have met a beatable field. Brandon Bates should have the 6-year-old in striking range turning for the wire.
10-Paddy Murphy (12-1)-Drops to a more competitive level and will swing for a price in a race with a few question marks. Comes back in sequence and has enough gate speed to be put in play off the gate. Longshot needs a smooth trip and Warren can provide one.
Race 8 (9:30 PM PST)
3-Five Star Photo (7-1)-This mare cashed checks battling better at Hoosier. Atlee Bender steers for his father-in-law Erv Miller and that's a positive driver change. Might be overlooked and can connect at a nice price.
6-Lous Adonis (12-1)-Gets some needed class relief and drops to a level for success. Camera shy 5-year-old fits well and could surprise with a sharp steer by Mike Oosting.
7-Lous Andiamo (5/2)-Drew off by 4 lengths versus this kind and comes back at the same level to double up. Could take another picture if Leonard provides a sharp steer but will have to earn his way with this post draw.
Race 9 (9:50 PM PST)
6-Look Kimbo (7-1)-Loses Leonard to the program chalk below but Bender can provide a solid trip. Gets some considerable class relief and had bumpy trips in the last few starts. Will look for better and can surprise if racing with the leaders at the top of the stretch.
7-Toncredblyfastforu (2-1)-Not loving the short price but benefits from a driver change to Leonard. Like Kimbo this grinder needs to be positioned near the top of stack to be able to roll by them all down the lane.
