Thursday Thoughts: Foiled Again Tries...Again

by Al Cimaglia

March 8, 2018

Tonight at Yonkers, Foiled Again takes on a different group of foes in another attempt to capture the 100th win of his illustrious career. Although this is the same class as his previous attempts, non-winners of $20,000 last five starts, this is an entirely different field from those on 2/22. The other differences are Foiled Again draws the rail for the first time this year and tonight regular pilot Yannick Gingras will be back in the sulky.

For a moment I thought about not writing about another Foiled Again attempt to snag an elusive 100th win. Upon further reflection this is a such a significant accomplishment it is worthy of the coverage. When I think of great standardbreds with 100 wins Rambling Willie pops into my mind and his last victory was in August of 1983. So obviously this type of accomplishment doesn't happen often and I'm sure the connections of Foiled Again would like this to be the night.

What remains to be seen is if the track conditions will be "off" as has been the case for Foiled Again in the last three attempts to secure the milestone-win. If the weather forecast is correct the snow should be over, and the temperature could be in the 40's, which may mean the track won't be rated "fast". Foiled again has raced 32 times on a track not rated "fast" and has been able to record 12 wins. That's a slightly better win percentage then when he has raced on a "fast" track.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Yonkers-Race 8-Purse $20,000

1-Foiled Again (3-1)-The key to this attempt could be how beneficial the rail is as there are number of horses that can blast out. It would not be a shock to see #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 all leave, so Gingras will be put to the test early. On 2/1/18 in Gingras' last drive he used Foiled Again hard early on to get the lead and, in the end, fell short. That's the danger once again.

2-Twin B Impressive (20-1)-3rd start off the bench and will need to improve to be a threat tonight.

3-Starsky's Dream N (7-1)-Recent form has been dull but wouldn't be surprised by an aggressive steer this time.

4-Soho Wallstreet A (9/2)-Hasn't closed the deal on a sloppy track in last 2, may show improvement on a fast strip.

5-Toatsmygoats (5-1)-Would need a few breaks to win but is another who may blast out and hope for the best.

6-Badix Hanover (4-1)-2nd start for Banca after being claimed for $50k, could be sitting on a big try.

7-Hez A Dude A (4-1)-Ausie makes 2nd start in U.S., has gate speed and raced in 1:50.1 at the Big M.

8-Electric Western (20-1)-Looks over-matched and post makes matters worse.
