Sunshine Millions Preview is on the docket today at Gulfstream Park West, with competitive stakes races for most of the day.

The normal focus here is on the last four, but today we flip it around and take a shot at the opening Pick 5. They range in short races for 2-year-olds on up to accomplished older horses on the dirt and turf.

The curtain raiser of the day could be the best on the program. The Turf Preview Stakes has some solid campaigners grouped together today and is a excellent way to get out of the blocks.

Archer Road, who was dismissed in the Mr. Steele Stakes and responded with a 12-1 score, has been in superb form, with wins in four of his last five races. Trainer Stanley Gold has him running his best and je could be up to the task again. However, this is in no way an easy spot and Class and Cash and Galleon Mast are worthy of being on the Pick 5 ticket.

Rapid older horses take the spotlight in the Sprint Preview. Field Trip and Quijote could have a step on these. Field Trip’s beginnings are more humble than many of these but he’s won three straight races and is worthy of this stakes opportunity for trainer Henry Collazo. Quijote was a closing third in the Trinniberg Stakes two back and then overwhelmed a field of optional claimers here. He’s been in several stakes races and is a solid player here for trainer Sally Mitchelhill.

The Filly and Mare Turf Preview has a competitive bunch, and Picara, Spicy Nelly and Thinkin Cowtown carry the hopes of those who may follow this suggested ticket. Todd Pletcher-traiend Picara won last time going long on the turf and looks comfortable in her first journey around two turns. Spicy Nelly, trained by Oscar Gonzalez, also comes in off a win and just prior to that was second in the Panana City Stakes. She has three wins and two seconds in her last five and has doesn’t lose a step when she goes from dirt to turf or vice versa. Thinkin Cowtown, trained by Gary Jackson, has won four of his last six and looks ready to try stakes company.

The Classic Preview has only five in it, and two stand out – the Edward Plesa-trained Mr. Jordan and Deland, from the Victor Barboza, Jr., barn. Mr. Jordan is a stakes regular whose latest win came in May when he took the Big Drama Stakes. Deland seeks his third straight stakes win and his eight-length score in the Mo Exception Stakes signaled that he’s a force in these parts. He began his career in Puerto Rico and is rounding into top form here.

The opening Pick Five concludes with Juvenile Fillies Sprint, and Steve Dwoskin trainee Starship Nala is the probable favorite after a pair of seconds in Florida stallion stakes events. Select Friday, trained by David Fawkes, didn’t break well and was always outrun last time but was second in a state-bred stakes race two back. She fits with these, as does Milton Wolfson charge Busy Signal. She was second in an open optional claiming race and will probably find restricted company to her liking.
