If you’re playing the late Pick 4 at Del Mar on Saturday, the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap will be your most trying test.

The Seabiscuit is the 2nd leg (race 7) of the late Pick 4, and the 1 1-16th mile turf race has a full field without a standout. It is a spread race, but without wide spread as the three other races, although not as testing, aren’t gimmes either.

Four horses are used on the Pick 4 for the Seabiscuit: Pincheck, Synchrony, Ohio and He Will.

Pincheck is the biggest question as he comes in from Leopardstown (Ire) and rolled up four ins and 14 starts in his native land. He’s landed in the Jessica Harrington barn and gets Mike Smith for his 1st U.S. start.

Synchrony, trained by Michael Stidham, has had an outstanding year, with four wins in seven starts. He won two straight graded stakes at Fair Grounds early in the year and picked off two more graded events at Monmouth in late summer.

Ohio won a claiming race at Del Mar two races back and responded to a big hike up to the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile at Santa Anita produced a solid 3rd. He’s a 7 year old but has been some of his best running this year, most recently for the Michael McCarthy stable.

Also worth using is He Will, a capable veteran for the Jerry Hollendorfer barn. He didn’t get involved in the ultra-quick Eddie D Stakes (winning time 1:10 4-5 for 6.5F furlongs by Stormy Liberal). Back to turn turns, he’s a legit late threat, especially with a fast pace. He looks like he’s sitting on a big effort and will be attractive in the straight pools as well.
