ABOUT THE TRAVERS STAKES

Also referred to as the "Mid-Summer Derby", the 152nd running of the Travers will be held this year on Saturday, August 28, 2021. The Travers has run every year in August at New York's Saratoga Race Course. It's current distance of 1 1/4 miles has been in place for more than a century, but has been ran at different distances throughout history ranging from 1 1/8 to 1 3/4 miles.

The race recieved it's name from William R. Travers, the first president of Saratoga who won the iaugural running in 1864 with a horse named Kentucky. The Travers is one of the oldest stakes races for 3-year-olds in the USA.

TRAVERS STAKES HISTORY

The Travers Stakes is a Grade I race run at Saratoga each August. It is nicknamed the "Mid-Summer Derby”. First run in 1864, it was named for William R. Travers, the president of the old Saratoga Racing Association. His horse, Kentucky, won the inaugural running of the Travers. The race is the highlight of the summer race meeting at Saratoga, just as the Belmont Stakes is the highlight of the spring meeting at Belmont Park.

The winner of the race is presented with a blanket of red and white carnations, which is approximately 10 feet long and requires about 1,500 flowers and a trophy. The trophy, a, gold-plated replica known as the Man o' War Cup, was designed by Tiffany and Co. Its named for the famous race horse, Man o' War, who won this race in 1920. Since 1961, the colors of the Travers winner have been painted onto a canoe which sits on a pond in the infield. So no matter how you like to bet, Xpressbet is your way to play.
