The Haskell Invitational began in 1968 at Monmouth Park. It was initially run as the Amory L. Haskell Handicap to honor its former president, Amory L. Haskell. It became an invitation-only stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1⁄8 miles, and in 2006 the race changed from handicap to allowance weight conditions.
Haskell Hat Tradition
In addition to the thrilling horse races, the commemorative hat giveaways are always one of the most anticipated aspects of the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park Racetrack. Fans wait each year for the new design, and proudly sport hats from years past. The tradition was started in 1988, and ebay does a roaring trade in hats from previous years.
Haskell Super Stars
In 2002, the purse was increased to $1,500,000 due to the presence of War Emblem, winner of the Haskell and Preakness Stakes. In 2015, the purse was increased to $1,750,000 as it featured American Pharoah in his first race since winning the Triple Crown. Other notable winners have been fillies Rachel Alexandra and Serena’s Song, winning in 2009 and 1995 respectively. Trainer Bob Baffert has won the race 8 times, but may not have a horse in the 2018 running.
